Bob Shea
| I realize that you have heard a lot from me in the recent weeks, ranting about such things as course maintenance, dress code and restaurant dining. Therefore, I promise no lecture this month BUT GENTLEMEN PLEASE, TUCK YOUR SHIRT IN!! (sorry, couldn't resist!).
Instead, I would like to take the opportunity to update you as to where we stand with membership levels as of 6/12/07.
We currently have 141 golf memberships. This is an increase of 11 over the June, 2006 number and only 3 short of our target number. We are very confident in reaching our goal as we are currently speaking with approximately 10 potential new golf members.
The swim membership is currently at 105. Historically, we have had approximately 120 swim members. However, we only need 8 more swim members to meet our swim revenue target, thanks in large part to the 8 swim members who added the new restricted golf program to their membership. We are also very confident that our swim membership will rise in the next few weeks, as historically the last week of school is a time when many families finalize the decision to join the Club.
Our social membership level has grown dramatically, from 22 in 2006 to the current 33 social members. This is a tremendous testament to the positive turnaround in the Club's general perception within the community and the great food and service being provided by the Daly family.
Our Tennis membership has also shown a small net gain over last year, and we now have 48 members (including 17 tennis only members) playing tennis on our beautiful clay courts.
I told everyone in March that the Board's #1 priority for 2007 was to control costs and increase membership levels in all categories, with the long term goal of avoiding a year-end assessment to cover normal Club operating costs. As we've stated several times in the past, the best sales people for the Club are current members. I sincerely hope that with your ongoing help in attracting new members, by next month I will be able to confirm that all 2007 membership goals have been met and that there will be no assessment this fall due to normal operational shortfalls. As I've stated in the past, any fall assessment would be reserved for only a major, unforeseen catastrophic event, such as a major crack in the pool or major damage to the pump house on the golf course.
Please contact me or any member of the Board if you have any questions relating to our membership drive.

| The golf season is into full swing. April started slow however May was beautiful and play was steady. This is an important newsletter with a lot of information.
First Junior Golf is at the top of my list. I have put up a sign up sheet at the pool. I have selected five dates for the first clinics. The classes will be no larger that five students. This will benefit the child's ability to learn and improve their skills. I will add additional dates to make sure that all juniors can partake. Any questions, please call Stan at 668-7260. Last year's junior clinics were very rewarding and special. Juniors are the bloodline for our future members. The times and dates shouldn't conflict with any swim team meets or practices.
The Ladies Association has some important tournament events coming up. The Peter Dunn tournament will be June 27th & 28th. Also, July is the month of the Mary Ahren's Tournament. All association members must play 4 rounds and the best 3 scores count. Lastly, the 3rd annual Rally for the Cure Tournament will be held Sunday, July 22, 2007. We will have an 8:30 AM shotgun and a 1 PM shotgun. Dinner will follow at approximately 6 PM.
The Men's schedule is very active in the next few weeks.
One Day Member Guest: Thursday June 21st The Summer Classic: Sat & Sun June 30th & July 1st The Calcutta: Sat & Sun July 7th & July 8th One Day Member Guest: Thursday July 19th
The Invitation for the 3-Day Member Guest will be emailed out soon. This is a great weekend and the highlight of the year.
A kind reminder that we need to replace our divots and repair our ball marks. The course is coming back nicely from the aerification process.
The weather is going to be great. Let's get out to play.

Grounds
Armand Regalbuti
| The Grounds Committee has formed four sub-committees as follows: Will Morris (projects), Ron Birmingham (communications), Lynn Engler (budget) and Jeff Kingsbury (beautification). And that leaves Chairman Armand Regalbuti with nothing to do! Each committee will establish goals and objectives for the year and review them at our next monthly meeting.
Early last month it was discovered over thirty sprinkler heads were damaged by frost heaves when winter subsided. Apparently several local courses encountered similar problems. Approximate cost = $500. Time and labor immeasurable.
Bunker edging continues. Water coolers on Holes 5 and 9 repositioned. Greens were aerated in late May. A hole by hole improvement list is being developed by Will Morris and Peter Gorman. The plan will be phased-in, with some near term and others over 2-3 years. The theme is (A) fairways (B) drainage ) grounds. This list will be part of the goals and objectives to be presented at the June Board Meeting.
Armand Regalbuti and Jeff Kingsbury toured the grounds along with Donna Szwed and Barbara Landry to get some input on decorative shrubs and foliage plantings to consider. All nine holes will be foliated in some way. i.e. #3 plantings of two tone hosta right of greenside bunker, #4 shrubbery, flowers, and plantings along both side of the brook. Considering financial constraints and limited manpower it appears that many objectives can be met in short order.
The Grounds Committee is seeking donations of plants, shrubbery, etc. from members whose gardens are bursting with such items. Please call Armand Regalbuti (623-6973) and he will come to your place and perform the transplant!
One final note. If you get to see Peter Gorman work you will also see his dog "Tanner", a border collie that's seldom more than twenty yards away from Peter if he's not riding in the cart. Notice the lack of squirrels on the course?

| A lot has happened in the ladies league and with future plans going on I see no slowing down!
There has been a good turnout in the league both AM and PM. Keep it going! The league is in the process of trying to improve our shower area upstairs and will have a discussion within ourselves on June 28th. There will be a cocktail party that evening and this will wrap up the Peter Dunne Tournament and give us a chance to regroup as a league after a couple months.
Our first major tournament, "Marilyn Tynan", has been played and congratulations to Donna Szwed our first place winner. Second place was a tie; Shirley O'Keefe and Susan Szwed. Next, on the agenda will be the Peter Dunn, June27th and 28th. Also, congrats to all the ladies who are out there this year for the first time in the league. You're doing a great job. Thanks to Donna Szwed and Barbara Landry for planting the flowers in all the barrels and pots. Everything looks beautiful thanks to your hard work. One more thanks to Peter Gorman for his suggestions and plans. Set your sights on the Mary Ahrens tourney starting in July. See you out on the course!

Course Superintendent
Peter Gorman
| One of the goals of our department is to communicate effectively with the membership regarding course conditions, cultural programs, and the maintenance operation as a whole. I would like to take the opportunity to discuss the most important form of communication between golfers and the maintenance staff.
One of the hazards of working on a golf course is the potential to be struck by a golf ball. Often times we are not aware that there is a group waiting to hit or that we are working in harms way. We ask that you take a moment to alert us to your presence before you play your shot. Trust me, we will be happy to get out of the way.
I thought I would share a few things that most golfers are probably not aware of regarding working on a golf course: 1. Most often we cannot hear a golfer yell FORE! over the sound of our equipment. 2. Even if we know you are playing your shot, it is easy to lose sight of the ball as it approaches. 3. Most people yell FORE! too softly and too late for a person to locate the ball and react to the warning Here are a few suggestions that will make it easier for us to avoid injuries to both staff members and golfers as well: 1. Please make your presence known before you play your shot. A simple FORE! will let us know that you are in the area and ready to play. 2. Make sure the person knows you are going to play by waiting for a signal (such as a wave of the arm). 3. If the shot has even a chance of landing near the person, yell FORE! as SOON and as LOUDLY as possible (this applies to every person in the group). 4. If the person in danger is near a machine, or if people are working on both sides of the hole, raise an arm to indicate the direction the ball is traveling.
Basic golf course etiquette requires golfers to wait until other players have cleared the area before playing, and to alert them if they may be in danger of being struck by an errant shot. This courtesy must be extended to the members of the maintenance staff. Their dedication and hard work produce the conditions that you enjoy throughout the golf season, so please take the time to respect their safety and well being.

 Tennis
Andy Brydges
| The courts have been open about a month, and seem to be getting lots of play. If your game still isn't where you want it to be, remember that you can call our pro Russ Bombard for a lesson. Take advantage and kick start your season. The Tennis Committee is brainstorming ideas for social events to get the membership together later in the summer, and will keep you posted. Suggestions are welcome.
Russ Bombard, our tennis pro, will be holding his popular "Brush up on Basics" clinic again this year on Saturdays in July. The clinics will run from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. The cost is $75. Please contact Russ or sign up at the clubhouse to join this program.
Sign ups for the Junior Tennis Program have been posted at the courts as usual the Junior Program will run for six weeks, starting June 25.
The tennis website will be updated shortly - until then please look to the newsletter and occasional emails for updates.
As always - remember to sweep your court AND lines after play. |
