President's Message by

Gary Roman
July 1st represents the midpoint of the year and the high point of activity at Suffield Country Club. There is a full range of activity at the Club including the Suffield Sports Academy, tennis and swim lessons and golf tournaments for our Members and their guests.

Late in June, the Club held its Annual Meeting and this year the members in attendance offered praise for dining operation and constructive comments for increased service for our Members. As part of the President's report, I was able to highlight some of the positive events over the past twelve months. Included in the highlights were the following:

* The successful switch from the employee based dining service to the concessionaire based service owned and operated by the Daly's.

* The dramatic overhaul of the Membership categories implemented during the winter for 2006. The changes included enhanced Senior categories, Complete Club and Corporate Memberships.

* The addition of 38 new families to the Membership roles at SCC in 2006, which brings our membership to 281 families. The Golf membership is at the year end 2005 levels or 128 golfers.

* The formation of the Suffield Sports Academy which had it's inaugural class of 19 attend of week of golf, tennis and swim instruction during the last week of June. The Club's staff was responsible for the design of the week's activities and provided the instruction. A highlight for the Group and several parent chaperons was a visit to Family Day at the Buick Open.

* Decorating changes in the Clubhouse including curtains, painting and artwork; all of which were donated to the Club. The Club also installed a new phone system, which equipment was also donated. The goal of installing the new phone system was to increase the access to the Staff and the Dining Services.

The Members in attendance discussed the importance of maintaining a quality food service in the Dining Rooms and that the support by all the Members is required for the Daly's to make a living and to provide quality service to our Members.

As a reminder, all Members are responsible for the dining room minimum of $50 per month during the months of April through November of each year. The contract negotiated with the Daly's includes the monthly minimum payment by our Members, if the Member does not spend the appropriate amount from the dinner menu or at special events. If you are unable to dine during the month or attend a special event to use your minimum, please pay the minimum that you are billed by Cameron's Catering, LLC. The ability of the Club to retain any caterer depends on our ability to utilize the services of the Daly's or to pay what is billed.

The goals for the next twelve months detailed during the Meeting include the highest priority of retaining our Members and recruiting new Members. In addition, the Club must maintain a "Member Friendly" environment where service to our Members is the highest priority. The Board welcomes any suggestions by our Members that will address an oversight or add a service required by our Members.

Have a wonderful summer and enjoy the Club.

Hi everyone! It's been a tough one as far as the weather is concerned. We did get out and play on June 21st though and played the Marilyn Tynan Tourney.
Congratulations to our winners:

1st place: Jean Johnson
2nd place: Jane Blake

The mens mixer has been changed to June 28th, details to follow.Because of all the rain cancellations the July tournaments schedule has changed and I will be contacting all women association members to let them know of the changes. The Susan Komen Breast cancer tournament is July 23rd and we would love to have a good percentage of our members playing. Sponsors are in need as well as donations.

Just a couple notes: Please call Stan to sign up for tournaments or to let him know you are cancelling.
Also, please consider signing up for the ladies league even if you play sometimes in the A.M. Please call me with any questions Let the sun shine in!!!!!!!!!

The season is in full swing, with the Junior Program up and running during the day, and the men and women's teams playing weekly in the Greater Hartford League matches. Deedee has done a great job keeping the courts in great shape, especially with the challenging weather. Private lessons from Russ Bombard are available, helpful, and encouraged!

Also, please make sure that you always play in clay-court approved tennis shoes with a flat, herringbone-patterned sole. No running, cross-training, or other shoes with raised treads are acceptable because they tear up the court; this is particularly important with the soft conditions we have had this spring.

* Please note that sign-up sheets have been posted at the courts if you want to reserve a specific timeslot.

* Russ will be holding his popular "Brush up on Basics" clinic again this year on Saturdays in July. The clinics will run from 6:00 to 7:30 pm. The cost is $55. Please contact Russ or Judy or sign up at the clubhouse to join this program.

* As always - remember to sweep your court and lines after play.

Reminder
On Monday, June 19, in the middle of the afternoon, a man in a vehicle with out-of-state plates attempted a drive-by abduction of a member of the SCC staff who was planting flowers at the top of the tennis driveway on Main Street. This was witnessed by another person on Main Street, the police were notified immediately, and at this time the investigation is ongoing.

We are very thankful that nobody was hurt, and we ask that all members continue to be aware that these random and unsettling events can happen even in our small town. We particularly ask parents of junior members to pickup and dropoff their children at the club facilities, rather than at the end of the driveways. If your child needs assistance to call for a ride, the clubstaff will be happy to help them.

School is out, the pool is open and tennis and golf are in full swing as the summer months are finally upon us. The Pub and Dining Room continue to see terrific activity as many of our members are enjoying the rejuvenated atmosphere, service and great food being provided by YOUR Club. The Daly's have done a terrific job responding to questions and comments, and they continue to strive to provide the best possible dining and Pub experience within the confines of the Club's facilities.

Our hope is that dinner reservations continue to increase during periods other than the last weekend of the month so that the Daly's will be able to expand Dining Room hours to include additional nights. To that end, we remind all members that the last weekend of each month remains extremely busy and to the extent it fits into your busy schedule, PLEASE UTILIZE THE DINING ROOM PRIOR TO THE LAST WEEKEND OF THE MONTH.

As an additional reminder, there is a dress code for dining at the Club that is posted on the bulletin board located in the main entrance hallway. Attire for the Dining Room is business casual dress, which means long pants and collared shirts for men and long pants or skirt with appropriate top for women. The Pub Room and Patio are more casual, and golf sportswear is appropriate (gentlemen, please remove your hats in the Pub Room). Basically, the Club requests no blue jeans, t-shirts or swimwear anywhere in the clubhouse or on the patio.

We look forward to having a great summer at the club and continuing the renewed excitement of the NEW SCC.
