In July the Club experienced many events that we all can be proud of as the year 2006 unfolds. The highlights through late July include the ongoing effort to recruit new members; the Swim Team's Junior Championship hosted by SCC; the Swing for the Cure® Golf Tournament and a number of social events at the Clubhouse. I would summarize all of these positive events as a very pleasant wave of positive momentum this year. Despite the stress of a very hot and humid start to the summer season, there is a very positive atmosphere throughout the Club.
Starting with the Membership numbers, I am very pleased to report that as of July 31st the Club has added 41 new families to the membership roles in 2006. New members were added in all categories and many inquires continue to arrive daily to our Website. As would be expected, the best chance of having the prospective member joining has been when the prospect has been introduced to the Club by a friend who is also current member. So please talk to your friends and neighbors about joining this year and refer them to the Website at www.suffieldcc.com.
During the last weekend of the July the Club hosted the Junior Swim Championships for the Greater Hartford Country Club Swim League. Over two hundred and fifty swimmers from many area Clubs participated in the competition in one of the hottest days of the summer. The competition was strong and Suffield Country Club placed first in the hotly contested competition. Kelly Patterson and her staff should be congratulated for putting together a well coordinated event that brought many visitors to our facilities.
On July 23rd the Club hosted the second annual Swing for the Cure® Breast Cancer Golf Tournament. The event is sponsored in cooperation with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and treatment. This year's Tournament hosted over 100 golfers, including many SCC members, and was a great fundraiser for the Charity. The event raised approximately $11,300, which will be sent to the Charity. Many thanks to the volunteers who were involved in this worthwhile event and special thanks to Susan Swzed, Donna Swzed, Tom Landry, Christine Foley, Jeannie Johnson and Stan McLennan.
There were several successful social events at the Club in July including the second annual Jimmy Buffet Casino Night, Swim Team Dance and Cocktails by the Pool. In addition several hundred visitors were at the Club a result of the Swim Championship and Swing for the Cure Golf Tournament.
Have a wonderful August and enjoy the Club.
Regards
Gary Roman

| A relay from Fifth to First
In one of the most exciting swim championships that I Can remember, Suffield's Juniors took first place in three of the final four relay events. These"high point" races catapulted us to victory after being fifth (out of seven) place earlier in the meet. What a superb effort by the entire team. The margin of victory was only seven points. The excitement built after each relay win, knowing that the "Suffield Sharks" could capture first. With one race remaining the Sharks needed a win to bring home the trophy, and win they did.
In another exciting day, the Seniors narrowly missed achieving a Suffield sweep. We came in second, losing by only nine points. The seniors qualified 39 swimmers for the finals. Their performances were outstanding and once again demonstrated the overall dominance of the Suffield Teams.
This championship weekend was a victory for the entire Suffield pool Community. The extraordinary help of so many parents on very hot days, earned the club many compliments from countless visitors. Everyone from those working the sales tables, the bull pen, the computer room, the timers, the swim coaches, the announcer and the club dining staff contributed many long and hot hours to make our event such an overwhelming success.
I have been participating in championships weekends for over twenty years, and I have never witnessed any other " club parents" that do as much that Suffield parents do. You are the best of the rest and your efforts and willingness to work and help, make you very special to me.
Dates to remember
* August 26 - Swim Team Awards 6pm @ the pool
* August 27 - End of the Summer Dance @ the pool with DJ Al Keney 7:30-10:00 for anyone entering 6th grade and older bring your friends.
Stop by the pool for more information and a permission slip.
Thank you, Kelly

Please RSVP to Andy and Lisa (668-4512) by August 4, or to Andy Brydges (668-1919). Dinner will be potluck, so please plan to bring a dish to share!!!
* Four Town: The Tennis Committee will begin to schedule people for The Four-Town Tournament (September 16) so please be on the lookout for announcements regarding this annual event. In addition to the match play, please be sure to join us for the after match banquet.
* Lost and Found: I found a Head racket at the courts a couple weeks ago and cannot seem to locate an owner it was found on a Monday night, so maybe from the men's GHL match, the women's GHL practice, or the Junior Program. If it's yours, please give me a call (668-1919).
* Thanks and congratulations to Russ, Tim, Deedee, and Judy for running another successful Junior Tennis program this summer. We're lucky to have such talented and enthusiastic staff for that program.
See you at the courts!

House Committee by
Chris Beaulieu and Bob Shea
| Welcome to the dog day's of summer. It has been hazy, hot and humid and I for one do not want to cook in these conditions (nor does the wife!) I have been taking advantage of the great service and food (not to mention the view from the patio!) at our pub and I hope all the members do the same. We would like to mention to all the pool members that the Daly's have supplied an extensive menu for the pool and welcome all to call up to the pub and have your lunch or snack delivered.....what service (did I mention the view from the patio?)
The house committee would also like to remind the membership that if you have a group of 6 or more people for the pub that you call ahead a time so your needs will be accommodated. As always, the house committee welcomes any and all suggestions from the members about our restaurant and/or clubhouse...our goal is to make Suffield Country Club "a better place to be."
Enjoy the rest of summer and we will see you at our club. (Did I mention the view?) |
