Frequently Answered Questions

We have found that many members have the same or similar questions about the condition and maintenance of the golf course. Please take a moment to review some of the questions and hopefully you will find the information interesting and useful. If there are any other questions you have please feel free to let us know by sending an email to superintendent@suffieldcc.com.

Yardage Markers

Yardage Markers
Many people have asked about adding more markers throughout the golf course to assist with club selection. We currently have yardages on all sprinkler heads within 250 yards of the center of the green. The sprinklers are located along the edges of the fairways (sometimes just in the rough), and are roughly 30 yards apart. We try to keep the heads trimmed but occasionally the grass grows over them, especially this year when they were used very little. If you see on that is being grown over, please feel free to brush the grass aside and we will hopefully get around to trimming it soon.

In addition to the sprinklers we have rectangular plates located at 100 (red), 150 (white), and 200 (blue) yards that are placed in the center of every fairway. You can even find one or two 150-yard posts that were used in years past. A few people have suggested that we restore these posts as they help determine distances for people who may have strayed away from their own fairway. These posts require additional maintenance and trimming, and I am not sure if a golfer who is playing from another fairway deserves the benefit of another yardage marker (but that is for the golf committee to decide).

In response to those that feel we need to add more yardage markers I would like to share my personal opinion on the subject. It cannot be denied that since the virtual extinction of the caddy, providing accurate yardage has made the game more enjoyable for the average golfer and certainly improves the pace of play. I will even go so far as to say that many new layouts would be impossible to navigate without the benefit a good yardage book or even guidance from above (Sky Caddies are available in the golf shop). While I admit that I have become as dependent on yardage markers as the next golfer, I tend to believe that there is a point at which they become excessive. I also believe that skill of judging distances and proper club selection, along with the art of course management have been all but lost in modern golf. I imagine they are probably packed away in a dark corner of the basement, collecting dust next to the persimmon drivers and mashie niblicks.

The decision to add markers on the golf course should begin with the Golf Committee. Any recommendation to add yardage markers should be coordinated with the Grounds Committee, and ultimately presented to the Board for final approval. However, in the sprit of compromise I will make every effort keep the markers visible so that golfers will have the information necessary to select the proper club. As far as making the shot and finding the green you are on your own.

I hope that you find this information useful and that it helps you enjoy your time at Suffield CC.
